Join Tony Myers and professional film director Peter Ferris for an introduction in how to make a film on your iPhone – whatever your level of experience.

More and more top filmmakers including Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and Mark Bendjelloul (Searching For Sugar Man) are using the iPhone as part of their repertoire and for some filmmakers it is their camera of choice for not only shooting short films, documentaries, music videos and cinematography – but also full-length feature films.

The iPhone (and other top-end smartphones) has revolutionised the industry because for many it’s the camera that’s always with you and is so unobtrusive and easy to use, with even just a little filmmaking knowledge.

The iPhone is also a mini studio in your pocket. Thanks to a huge range of apps it is possible to make a film, from script to premiere, on your iPhone – and we’ll show you how!

This masterclass, for all levels of filmmakers, will guide the user through the key developments and features of mobile filmmaking with practical tips on how to set up a shot, what apps to use and best techniques when it comes to editing.

Tony Myers is the editor and founder of smartmoviemaking.com, one of the first websites dedicated to mobile filmmaking and is seen as a highly regarded and authoritative voice on this new and exciting genre. He is also a senior editor at the Guardian and was part of the launch team on its iPad edition.

Peter Ferris is unique in his extensive and varied first hand experience at the top level in many different areas of film, television, theatre and music industries. For 25 years Peter has taught screen acting classes throughout the UK with many of his students becoming famous names in the Film and TV Industry and for the past two years Peter has shot a 20 to 30-minute film at each of his monthly weekend screen acting film masterclasses in both Belfast and Cardiff and is now launching in London and Los Angeles. He switched to filming on smartphones soon after their introduction and will demonstrate not only how to use the iPhone and smartphone camera but also how to use some of the many accessories such as dollies and steadicams to get the perfect shot.

Tony and Peter are also founders and creators of the iPhone Popup Film Festival, which showcases the best mobile films in venues in the UK, Europe and The United States.

The iPhone Popup Film festival returns with a bang in 2013 – and a funky new venue, The Lamb Beer & Liquor in North London, on Tuesday January 15 @ 7.30pm.

We’ll be curating another bunch of exclusive short films from all over the world, which have been shot on an iPhone (and other smartphones) and there will also be an opportunity for filmmakers to show their own films on a big screen in a special ‘open iPhone’ slot.

Here’s how the iPhone Popup Film Festival works. Bring your film on your iPhone or iPod Touch, plug it into our Pop Video pico projector and it’s showtime. It’s as simple as that.

We are strictly lo-fi, although our awesome little Pop Video projector will screen your films in qHD (960 x 540 pixel resolution) quality on a ‘big screen’ 50-inches wide. For audio we will plug into the venue’s house PA system.

Admission is free and there is no charge to show your films, although you must sign up via our meetup page if you want to show a film on the night, to guarantee a slot as spaces are limited, otherwise simply turn up and enjoy the show!

We’ll also feature live acoustic music from Emma Darlow and Carl Prekopp from the fabulous Fircones and an art exhibition, to make the evening a mini multi-media event. This is the ‘festival in your pocket’, strictly no red carpet and everyone is welcome.

Our launch last year created a huge amount of interest in mobile filmmaking and was a spectacular success, so come see for yourself – and why not bring a film!

Our guest speaker will be filmmaker Peter Ferris, who will give an introductory talk on mobile filmmaking before the screening of one of his own shorts.

Nearest tube: Highbury and Islington

The iPhone Popup Film Festival will be putting on a special film night for everyone going to the Gypsy in the Field Festival the weekend of 22 September. As well as showing films on iOS devices from festival goers (including footage taken at the event), we will be organising a special popup cinema and showing a feature film on each night – all from our iPhone!

• This event is only open to Gypsy Festival goers. To find out more details and purchase tickets, visit the Gypsy in the Field website.

Did some one mention an Indian summer? This could possibly be your last chance to have some outdoor fun in England this year – and anyone who has been to the Gypsy open mic nights in London know that the calibre of performers taking part; poets, musicians, comedians, etc, will make this event one of the best little festivals in the summer calendar, so don’t miss out – and don’t forget to bring your iPhone, if you have one.

We’ll see you there.

For the official launch of the Heavy Water vodka iPhone Popup Film Festival we are going all Scandi-cool with the fabulous Nordic Bar on Newman Street the destination for our first screening and if all goes well the chilled out venue in Boho Fitzrovia will become our regular home when we are in London.

Here’s how the iPhone Popup Film Festival works. Bring your film on your iPhone or iPod Touch, plug it into our Pop Video pico projector and it’s showtime. It’s as simple as that.

The night will be an opportunity for anyone who has made a film on their iOS device to come along and show their work on a ‘big screen’. This is the ‘festival in your pocket’, with no red carpets. We are strictly lo-fi, although our awesome little Pop Video projector will screen your films in qHD (960 x 540 pixel resolution) quality on a ‘big screen’ 5- inches wide. For audio we will plug into the Nordic Bar’s house PA system.

With an expected announcement from Apple on a new iPhone the next day, the night will also include a mini-retrospective of some of the best films made on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in a specially curated online selection of films, including the first showing in London in public of Apple Of My Eye, widely credited as the first iPhone 4 film.

As well as launching the iPhone Popup Film Festival the night will be something of a double celebration as sound artist Andy Rowe, who makes music under the name of The Slate Pipe Banjo Draggers, will be previewing his new limited edition vinyl LP, peeled up for the sake of fruit music 2012, with a very special set of ambient and technical wizardry.

We are also very proud to announce that we will also be showing a selection of work from the fabulous typewriter artist Keira Rathbone, making the evening a mini, multi-media festival, created on the iPhone.

Admission is free and there is no charge to show your films, although you must sign up here if you want to show a film on the night, to guarantee a slot as spaces are limited.

So let’s go underground, into the bowels of Fritzrovia, and show us what you’ve got. Alternatively come along anyway and watch some of the best videos being produced on iOS devices and listen to cutting-edge sounds – or simply check out one of London’s coolest bars.

Please check out our event sponsors:

The first iPhone Popup Film Festival night will be held at the medieval Black Swan Inn, in York on Monday 3 September 2012.

If you want to show your film, please go to our Sign Up page and also take a look at our How To Take Part page, as there is a couple of things you need to know before you show your film.

• Alternatively, if you can’t make it to York you can submit your film here and we’ll endeavour to show it on the night.

The event is free and anyone can come and join us on the night, but to show your film as part of the festival you must sign up first, as slots are limited.

As well as showing some of the best iOS films, we’ll also be featuring a live acoustic set from local band The Pop Up Monsters.

So get shooting and editing, and join us for the first ever ‘film festival in your pocket’ and an opportunity to show your work on the ‘big screen’.

The future is digital. Strictly no red carpet.
